Star Recycling
Star Recycling has its beginnings from an initiative taken within former Chaparral Steel called the STAR Project
(Systems and Technologies for Advanced Recycling). The vision was to target synergies in steel manufacturing to a
point where everything that is produced will be recycled and turned into a useful product or raw material.
Gerdau Ameristeel Midlothian’s shredder processed over 600,000 tons of obsolete cars and light scrap, generating
over 175,000 tons of shredder residue every year.
The shredder residue includes aluminum and other non-ferrous metals in addition to glass, PVC, rubber, and plastics.
Most of this non-metallic residue normally would end up in landfills.
Since 1998, Star Recycling uses an innovative flotation separation technology as a main component to separate shredder
residue into multiple finite streams.
Star Recycling began commercial operations in March, 1998, in Midlothian, Texas.
