Benefits

Gerdau Ameristeel offers an attractive, incentive-based pay system, where employees have the opportunity to learn and progress. We also offer a wide range of benefits, described in more detail below.

Flexible Benefits

Gerdau Ameristeel's Flexible Benefits Program enables employees to select many of their benefits from a wide variety of choices. This allows them to choose the right level of coverage for themselves and their family and take advantage of the opportunity for tax savings when paying for this coverage. The Flexible Benefits Program provides employees with "benefit dollars" to use toward the purchase of benefit coverage. Some of the benefits included in the Flexible Benefits Program are:

  • Medical Benefits
    Gerdau Ameristeel offers a comprehensive medical plan, including vision prescription drug coverage.

  • Dental Benefits
    Under the Flexible Benefits Program, Gerdau Ameristeel employees can choose from either a traditional fee-for-service dental PPO option, or a prepaid dental plan using network dentists, or employees may elect no coverage at all.

  • Life Insurance
    All Gerdau Ameristeel employees are covered by a basic life and accidental death and dismemberment insurance program. Supplemental life insurance and dependent life insurance are also available for purchase.

  • Flexible Spending Account
    These accounts allow employees to pay eligible health and dependent day care expenses with tax-free dollars from their pay. By making contributions to the account with tax-free dollars from their pay, their taxable income is reduced.

Short and Long-term Disability

Gerdau Ameristeel provides short and long term disability plans for our employees.

Savings Plan (401k)

To help employees save for their long-term goals, Gerdau Ameristeel offers a 401k savings plan. Employees can defer a pre-tax percentage of pay to the plan. Gerdau Ameristeel provides a company match. There are several investment funds to choose from and earnings are tax-free while the money is in the account.

Vacation

Vacation credit starts building at Gerdau Ameristeel from the first day of employment. Employees earn two weeks of vacation after one year of service. Additional weeks are added as service increases, up to a maximum of four weeks after 15 years of service. In addition to paid vacation, Gerdau Ameristeel recognizes 11 holidays during the calendar year.

Scholarship Programs

Scholarship programs are offered in the United States and also in Canada for children of Gerdau Ameristeel employees. The awards are offered annually.

Tuition Refund

Gerdau Ameristeel provides tuition assistance to employees who wish to improve their skills and develop their knowledge by taking approved work-related courses. The Tuition Refund Program provides a tuition and book refund. Approved courses can be taken at a state, private, or correspondence school. Employees may begin taking courses on or after their first day of employment, and are eligible for reimbursement after successful completion of their program.
